Date: Wed 22 Feb 2012 Source: World Health Organisation (WHO), CSR, disease Outbreak News [edited] http://www.who.int/csr/don/2012_02_22/en/index.html As of 22 Feb 2012, The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of a new case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus. The case is a 45-year-old female from Menofia governorate. She developed symptoms on 10 Feb 2012, received oseltamivir treatment on 17 Feb 2012, and is still recovering. The case was laboratory confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratories; a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network, on 18 Feb 2012. Epidemiological investigation into the source of infection indicates that the case had exposure to backyard poultry. Of the 160 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 55 have been fatal. -- Communicated by: ProMED-mail Rapporteur Marianne Hopp [According to the table of the cumulative number of confirmed human cases for avian influenza A(H5N1) reported to WHO, the global total of avian A/(H5N1) influenza is now 586 with 346 fatalities. The 1st cases in Egypt were observed in 2006, when there were 18 cases and 10 fatalities, followed by 25 and 8 in 2007, 8 and 4 in 2008, 39 and 4 in 2009, 29 and 13 in 2010, 39 and 15 in 2011, and 2 so far in 2012.
